- Think through and identify the site's value proposition, its purpose(s) for being.
- Seek the advice of trusted industry professional(s) to evaluate the design and technology approach, and assist with planning.
- Identify and prioritize features and functionality for the site, including automation and productivity enhancing features. Plan with longer-term considerations in mind - school size, facilities etc.
- Perform a technology infrastructure assessment to insure the project will be built on a sound technology foundation that can evolve and accommodate site growth.
- Evaluate the "buy" vs. "build" decision to determine the most cost-effective alternatives.
- Create project plan and roll out functionality in a gradual manner. Allow users to use functionality, and have in place a mechanism to collect feedback on what works and what does not.
- Create an RFP including specific measures defining project success.
- Budget realistically, and if the project must roll out over multiple fiscal periods, so be it.
- Select a technology and design vendor as a trusted resource to work with on an ongoing basis.
- Win community acceptance and buy-in through student web clubs, school programs, seminars, and Internet expos on campus to illustrate functionality and do Q & A.
