There are many reasons to choose one technology over another; how well it solves a problem is just one. Cost is an obvious factor that can be very difficult to calculate. Consideration should be given not only to the up-front license and development fees, but also to costs associated with ongoing maintenance, the systems it runs on, and the personnel who care for and feed it.

In-house expertise is a factor that's often overlooked. There is no doubt that a client's experience with a given technology will be better if the people they have on staff are familiar with it. Future needs and interoperability with other systems also should be considered.
